There are different types of camping experiences available to you when on safari in Tanzania and the purpose of this guide is to help to unravel the mysteries surrounding the differences between each one for your benefit…
Also known as “seasonal camps,” semi-permanent camps are essentially mobile camps which are set-up in one location for extended periods of time. This can be anywhere between one month and six months, although some can and do remain in the same locations for much longer, sometimes years. Semi-permanent camps are referred to as mobile camps precisely because they can be moved. They are not greatly different from Luxury mobile camps since they provide a very similar standard of accommodation with the difference that, due to the fact that they do not need to be constantly moved around, the facilities provided can be more substantial that those offered by a luxury mobile camp. Some semi-permanent camps even provide a swimming pool which clearly cannot be considered as being “mobile.”
Camp Zebra is a semi-permanent camp which follows the great Wildebeest migration around the Serengeti National Park and the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Because it remains in each location for a minimum of one month and a maximum of four months, we are able to set up far more complex systems such as our solar power unit and are able to set up such additional facilities such as four poster beds, additional lounge areas, libraries and even Wi-Fi (depending upon camp locations).
The disadvantages of semi-permanent camps over luxury mobile camps is that locations are dictated by the camp operator and not by its guests and camps are normally shared with other clients sent by other tour operators. They can only be booked for private and exclusive use by large groups who are willing and able to pay a premium for the pleasure of being on their own. They also are less flexible when it comes to providing a tailor-made experience since all of the elements which make-up the camp are set by the camp operators and not by the gests themselves.
Intimate Places Tanzania and semi-permanent camps
Camp Zebra falls under this catergory. It is located in the Ndutu area for the calving season, the Kogatende area for the river crossing season and spends a further 3 months in central Serengeti depending upon where the main herds are located.
